Spain’s LaLiga is struggling with racism, with the target being the relatively unpopular provocateur Vinícius Jr. However, the Brazilian chic in the colours of Real Madrid has now received satisfaction as three of his opponents know their punishment.
A trio of Valencia fans made grossly racist insults against him last May, not realising that their behaviour could have consequences. These are now known, although they have all apologised by letter to the player and the club.
They have been sentenced to eight months in prison and have also been banned from football stadiums for two years. This is a breakthrough as similar sentences have not been handed down before.
“This decision is great news for the fight against racism in Spain, as it repairs the damage suffered by Vinícius Júnior.
Itsends a clear signal to those who go to football stadiums just to offend that LaLiga will identify them, report them and there will be criminal consequences for them,” Spanish LaLiga chief Javier Tebas said in a statement.
Although the fans have been sentenced to eight months in jail, they may well not get it. This is because in Spain it is customary to serve a sentence at large in the case of a first conviction for a non-violent offence.
