French prosecutors are demanding that Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema be convicted for his part in the alleged extortion of former national team teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
Both Benzema and Valbuena lost their places in the national team in 2016 because of the case. France national coach Didier Deschamps sent an invitation to Benzema only for this year’s Euros.
Before that, the Real Madrid striker missed out on the 2016 European Championship in France and even the World Cup in Russia, which France eventually won even without Benzema.
Benzema is accused of allegedly advising Valbuena to pay a group of blackmailers who had his sex tapes.
The problem, however, is that the French striker failed to appear in court on the second day. His lawyers, however, mention that it was impossible for him to appear in court because of his professional obligations.
The verdict could be handed down as early as this Friday with a possible sentence of up to five years without parole. However, prosecutors are only asking for a hefty fine and a ten-month suspended sentence.
Whatever the outcome of the trial, it is clear that Real Madrid would only find it difficult to replace him with someone. In the Spanish La Liga, he has a sensational 10+7 record in 12 games.
