Yesterday’s Champions League match was proof once again why Real Madrid is the absolute king of the Champions League and of Europe. Probably no other team could have scored 5 goals at Anfield in a 0:2 situation.
There were high expectations before the game. Real Madrid had won five of their last six matches, Liverpool were eager for a rematch. And at first, it looked like it was finally going to happen.
In the 4th minute Darwin Núñez sent the home side into the lead, and ten minutes later Mohamed Salah added a second goal after a huge foul by Thibaut Courtois. Real were on the towel, the players were absolutely not heads in the game and the fans were fearing a debacle.
But as Jürgen Klopp himself said in the press conference, Liverpool have to play two great games to advance, Real don’t have to play well and can still advance. That’s the greatness of a royal club.
And once again, it was proven by Vinicius, who engineered the turnaround. Virtually out of nowhere, when Real were helpless, he got a shot after combining with Benzema and curled it beautifully towards the bar.
He managed to add a second goal before half-time after Alisson’s blunder, and in the second half Liverpool were starting to fall apart like a house of cards. Immediately after the change of sides Militao turned the score around, Benzema added a fourth goal in the 55th minute and the Frenchman enjoyed one more goal after some wonderful action.
Real Madrid proved once again why they are the kings of Europe. Probably no other team in the world could have pulled themselves together like that and scored five goals after a 0-2 draw at a stormy Anfield. Modric and co. did it with such ease and grace that it is unbelievable.
“I don’t feel so good, well done Madrid. I’ve never seen a team come to Anfield and demolish Liverpool like that in Europe. Shameful,” Liverpool legend and current expert Jamie Carragher was heard saying after the game.
