Champions League
Real Madrid being favoured by referees? The non-exclusion of Vinícius and the different treatment of the players of both teams, Leipzig does not hide its frustration. Real players admit they were lucky
It wasn’t easy, but Real Madrid did it. On Wednesday, they earned a place in the Champions League quarter-finals at the Santiago Bernabeu. But you could say they owe a bit of that to the referee. The stars of relegated Leipzig had their say.

Here we go again. It seems that there can’t be a year when the Champions League doesn’t have a refereeing controversy. This time, Real Madrid drew a very lucky card with them, having knocked out Leipzig on Wednesday, at whose expense they advance to the quarter-finals of a competition in which they are right at home.
The Spanish side dominated the first mutual duel on the opponent’s ground 1: 0, and in the second one they earned a 1-1 draw, with RB being the better team in the match. Moreover, according to various opinions, it was damaged.
In fact, the goal that meant the advancement for Real Madrid was scored by Vinícius Junior in the 65th minute. However, it was the hero of the most successful club in the history of the competition who could have been sent off ten minutes earlier without much trouble when he senselessly attacked the opposing captain Willy Orban.
Real Madrid fans are also largely in agreement on the sending off. Leipzig’s Twitter account commented on the situation tellingly: “Vinícius grabs Willy unsportingly by the neck with both hands and sees only a yellow card. Interesting.”
The Brazilian once again confirmed that he has a hot head. He often faces criticism for his behaviour on the pitch. He is even less popular with all the fans. According to some icons of Spanish football and Los Blancos, such as Pedja Mijatovic, despite his footballing qualities, he can never become a legend of the club if he continues this kind of behaviour.
He often has similar excesses. And it was not his only offence in the match. There were more moments when he asked for trouble. But the referee managed the whole match rather strangely, according to the Leipzig stars.
Real Madrid pushed by the referee? Leipzig players react
“The referees don’t have the courage to send off such players. He grabbed me by the neck with both hands, which is unsporting,” Leipzig captain Willy Orban said after the match, according to Football-Espaňa.
” Even though Vinicius got a yellow card, he should have been off the pitch by then. He had a few tackles before that. But the referee generally spoke to us differently than to the opposing players. I don’t know why. We’re nice and funny guys too.”
According to Raum, some Los Blancos players even came up to the Leipzig star, saying they realised they were a bit lucky. But that won’t help the German side, it won’t bring them back into the game.
It’s worth noting then that Real Madrid were the victims of a controversial decision over the weekend in the league. On this occasion, coach Carlo Ancelotti said that there are better referees in European football than in LaLiga. Leipzig players certainly cannot say the same now.
