Real Madrid has once again confirmed that it is an expert on the Champions League. Although they were not the better team for most of the game against Dortmund, they ended up being the winners after goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinícius. He won the trophy for the fifteenth time.
The start of the game was nervous and full of inaccuracies from both sides, without any big chances for either side. The Spaniards missed their first two shooting attempts, Federico Valverde heading high over, then Vinícius.
On the other side, Julian Brandt had a much better chance in the 14th minute, but conveniently missed the target. Seven minutes later, Karim Adeyemi had a huge opportunity, rounding Thibaut Courtois, but he dug the ball in too far and didn’t score.
Borussia’s big chances continued, with another shot from Niklas Füllkrug ending up on the right post of the Real goal. And Courtois had to go down once more in the first half when he parried a long-range shot from Sabitzer.
So it was a goalless draw in the cabins after the dominance of the weaker team. Real seemed to want to win the game less. In personal duels, his players were mostly later and let Dortmund’s attackers into big chances very cheaply and often.
Real Madrid on the football throne for the 15th time
After the change of sides, Carlo Ancelotti’s charges were more active, and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had to pull out of the first half. From the ensuing corner kick, Dani Carvajal headed dangerously and just over.
However, it was only a rare five-minute period, and Dortmund’s chances followed again, with the biggest one not coming from Füllkrug. But Real had experience on their side and capitalised in the 74th minute. Carvajal made no mistake after a corner kick from Toni Kroos.
Four minutes later it could have been all over, but Jud Bellingham’s goal was knocked down by defenders for a corner. Two more great chances for the favourites were saved by goalkeeper Kobel, but the Spaniards got the momentum on their side.
And in the 83rd minute, the pressure culminated in a second goal from Vinícius. After a big mistake by Maatsen. Dortmund then reduced the arrears, but from an offside, and Real had already secured the final.
