Real Madrid and Barcelona have always been extremely evenly matched, if a team has dominated both games in a season, it has been a feast. But now the forces are distributed differently, Los Blancos have celebrated victory in El Clásico five times in a row. Will the streak continue, or will the Catalans break it?
For six games in a row, Real Madrid fans have not experienced what it is like to lose to Barcelona. The last time they fell to their hated rival was in March 2019, when Rakitic scored a one-goal winner.
In the following match, the duel at Camp Nou ended in a goalless draw, after which the winning streak of the royal club was already underway. March’s 2-0 win in 2020 was led by Vinícius and Mariano, while in the autumn El Clásico Real won 3-1 thanks to goals from Valverde, Ramos and Modric.
The Merengues subsequently dominated the second El Clásico of the season, with Benzema and Kroos scoring in a 2-1 win. Madrid also dominated the autumn clash between the Spanish and Catalan capitals, with Alaba scoring first at Camp Nou and Vázquez adding the second. Agüero only reduced it to 1:2 in the 97th minute.
The fifth win in a row came in Saudi Arabia. Real Madrid and Barcelona play in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup. De Jong replied to the first goal by Vinicius and Fati equalised after Benzema’s goal. But in extra time, Valverde decided the match and confirmed Madrid’s dominance over Barcelona.
And that’s a very hard thing to bite in Catalonia. It is well known that this rivalry goes far beyond football, reaching into politics and hatred between Spain’s two biggest cities. And to lose to Madrid five times in a row? That’s a huge blow to Catalan pride.
But Barcelona will not find it easy at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid lead the league by 10 points over Sevilla, with a 15-point lead on the Blaugranas. Moreover, with an incredible turnaround, they have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League over PSG, so the atmosphere in white is ideal at the moment.
But Barcelona are also in good form. Under Xavi, they are on the rise again, they have not lost 11 games in a row, they have reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League and they have already jumped to third place in the La Liga table. The winter reinforcements have acclimatised well, with the healthy Pedri shining. El Clásico will be extremely interesting again.
