“El derbi madrileño has traditionally had a lot of momentum. It was even more so this weekend, when all week long in Spain, it was all about Vinícius and his celebratory dances.
Atlético captain Koke said that if he danced at the Wanda Metropolitano, there would be trouble. An even worse statement was added by the president of the Bravo agents association, Pedro, who said that Vinícius’ dances show disrespect for the opponent and he should not play the monkey.
This caused a wave of support for the Brazilian youngster in the world, with Neymar, Ronaldo, Kaká, almost all his teammates from the Brazilian national team, the Brazilian federation and Real Madrid supporting him on social media, and he received support from almost all Brazilian league clubs.
And the truth, of course, lies on the pitch. Atlético may have been the better team early on and at one point led 4-0 on shots, but football is played for goals. In the 18th minute, Federico Valverde brought the ball out from the right wing to the left. There Rodrygo passed the ball to Tchouameni, ran into the box, the Frenchman found him with a beautiful lob and the young Brazilian opened the scoring with a half-volley.
And as expected, he and Vinícius did a celebratory dance in front of the Atlético fans.
Vinícius had a big hand in the second goal. The Brazilian youngster collided with Modric on the halfway line and headed into the box. His attempt only ended up on the bar, but Valverde got to the ball to make it 2-0 in the 38th minute.
The home side managed to equalise in the 83rd minute when the ball bounced into the net after a corner from Mario Hermoso’s shoulder, but the same player was foolishly sent off in stoppage time to deny Atlético time.
The game was quite attractive, especially in the first half, with some good quality football and some eye-catching action. However, the duel between the rivals had its downside.
As we already mentioned the pre-match furore around Vinícius, Atlético fans were quite taken with the Real star. “Vinícius, you’re a monkey, ” they chanted en masse outside the stadium, with one fan even bringing a replica of Vinícius with the head of a monkey.
And the racist abuse didn’t stop in the stadium. When Vinicius tried to tackle Axel Witsel in the second half, the entire stadium chanted “Mooono!”, which translates as “monkey”.
