Real Madrid beat Atlético Madrid to win La Liga. This is how the duo Vinícius – Benzema worked their magic again
Real Madrid are running like clockwork and beat Atlético 2-0 in the city derby on Sunday. If you were looking for someone to take the most credit for this year’s run, you wouldn’t find them. Indeed, the White Ballet are working incredibly well as a team, which wasn’t always the norm before.
Real Madrid is running like clockwork and beat Atlético 2:0 in the city derby on Sunday. If you were looking for someone to take the most credit for this year’s run, you wouldn’t find them. The White Ballet are working incredibly well as a team, which wasn’t always the case before.
Of course, it’s the goal scorers who are the most visible. Karim Benzema has an 18+8 record this season, while Vinicius Junior has racked up 12 goals and 7 assists. But it’s really not just about them, without the great work of the whole team it would be useless.
Carlo Ancelotti is doing a great job on the bench with his son David Ancelotti and fitness coach Antonio Pintus. The Real players are all healthy under his guidance compared to last season, plus they are playing at a high tempo every 3 days. A big difference compared to last year, when Zidane had to count on only 11 A-team players.
Thibaut Cortouis has been fantastic between the three sticks, keeping his fourth consecutive clean sheet. Incredibly dedicated and reliable is the Alaba – Militao stopper duo, who have played very quickly and made us forget about Ramos and Varane, who left in the summer. The centre of midfield is still held by the CKM trio of Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, all of whom are the fulcrum of the entire lineup.
And in attack, Vinicius and Benzema shine, who in their current form are one of the best offensive duos in the world. And they showed it again against the toughest opponent in La Liga, as the reigning Spanish champions, Atlético Madrid, arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.
The match started at a great pace, but the Colchoneros got the first shot in the 16th minute.
Casemiro won the ball in his own half, passed it to Benzema, who found Asensio on the right wing from the first. He sent a cross behind the defence to Vinícius, who had only Benzema in the whitewash against three Atlético defenders. But he still found him with a precise centre and the French marksman fired a volley past Oblak in goal.
The whole attacking trio got in on the action and, with a slight change, had a hand in the second goal. Benzema was substituted at half-time due to an injury and was replaced by Jovic. But he also had a hand in Real’s second goal.
In the 57th minute, he worked Kroos’ overtime header superbly and played the ball to Vinícius on the left wing. The Brazilian youngster guided the ball into the middle and sent it across, where Asensio was completely free. He headed into Oblak’s opposite shoulder to increase Real’s lead to 2-0.
Real Madrid are now 8 points ahead of Sevilla in La Liga and 13 points ahead of fourth-placed Atlético. And Barcelona are 18 points behind in eighth. Carlo Ancelotti’s charges are going for the title in style.
