Real are on their way to guarter-finals. A crossbar saved the day against Leipzig

Real Madrid were very fortunate to reach the Champions League semi-final rematch, a 1-1 draw at home was enough to advance to the top eight teams in the competition. They won 1-0 away from home. Paradoxically, Leipzig were more dangerous in both games.

Leipzig entered the match with several dangerous breaks, after one of which Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško went alone at the goalkeeper. But firstly he only challenged Andrija Lunin, secondly the linesman waved away his offside position.

In the 13th minute, Lois Openda was alone on the edge of the box, but he missed the ball perfectly with his right foot and missed the goal. Three minutes later, after a superb pass from Dani Olmo, he was in an even better position but his left-footed shot again missed the far post.

Only then did the home team take control of the ball, but their offensive players did not produce any dangerous shots. On the other hand, in the 43rd minute, Openda wasted a third chance, only splitting the left side netting of Lunin’s goal from a half-volley.

The home crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu even booed at times, so the game was scoreless. After the change of sides, Olmo had a promising chance from a free kick, but only hit the wall.

Real struggled their way into the quarterfinals

In the 55th minute, the head referee could have sent off Vinícius for unsporting behaviour, but he only gave him a yellow card. Then Jude Bellingham could have decided the game, but his attempt was stopped by teammate Rodrygo.

Seven minutes later, Real celebrated, with Vinícius’ first touch heading just wide of the left post. In the 68th minute, Willy Orban equalised with a header that gave Lunin no chance.

Leipzig could have turned the game around, but neither Openda nor Šeško took any chances. Olmo hit the crossbar with a lob in stoppage time and the Spanish side were tied 1-1 going into the next round.
