One of the highlights of Wednesday’s Champions League programme will be RB Leipzig’s match against Manchester City. The match is basically a tradition in recent years, what to expect this time and what to bet on?
RB Leipzig are on a roll in the season opener, having only found an opponent in Bundesliga leader Bayer Leverkusen. They plundered Bern 3-1 in the Champions League group opener and are only three points behind fifth place.
That didn’t work out for the Citizens last week, after dropping out of the Carabao Cup after losing to Newcastle, they also fell to Wolverhampton in the league. They still lead the domestic competition by one point over Tottenham and Arsenal.
RB Leipzig’s key figures
Benjamin Šeško shines in the home side’s attacking jersey, the tall Slovenian striker has already netted five goals since arriving from Leipzig in the summer. Twenty-year-old offensive all-rounder Xavi Simons is again on three goals and four assists.
Manchester City’s key figures
The home side are tirelessly pushed by striker Erling Haaland, last year’s Premier League top scorer is on eight goals and two assists this season. The sub roles unexpectedly suits Julian Álvarez, the Argentine striker has netted five goals and assisted on four.
Prediction
Leipzig are troubled by a defence that has conceded nine goals in the last eight games. That could be a significant problem against the Citizens. Last week, for example, it got two goals in the cup from second league Wehen Wiesbaden.
Moreover, the Citizens have been pedalling in attack even without Kevin de Bruyne, scoring two or more goals in five of their last seven games. The last two games, however, were without the sidelined Rodri and it showed. But he’ll be ready now.
Considering Leipzig’s defensive woes, on the other hand the great attacking quality of the Citizens and the return of the unheralded but all the more crucial Rodri, I expect Manchester City to win and score at least two goals.
