Arsenal won their third Champions League group stage match, beating Sevilla 2-1. The game was exciting from the first to the last minute, decided by a good fifteen minutes around half-time.
The Gunners started more actively, in the sixth minute Takehiro Tomiyasu shot from outside the box, but inaccurately. Three minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli went alone at the goalkeeper, but he ran out in time to parry the attempt.
After that, the game evened out and Sevilla started to attack. However, Lucas Ocampos missed the target from a sharp angle, as did another South American, Gabriel Jesus, on the other side.
At the end of the first half, Sevilla applied pressure, but Youssef En-Nessyri missed a great chance in the whitewash. Martinelli, on the other hand, broke away, rounded the goalkeeper and put the ball into a half-empty net.
The Gunners went into the cabins with a 1:0 lead. After the change of sides Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard could have increased the lead, but the former hit only the goalkeeper, the latter shot from a volley over. In the 54th minute, the celebration began.
Jesus took a surprise shot from an angle and hit the back post. But it wasn’t a two-goal game for long, the resulting goal surprisingly knocked the home side back. Four minutes later, midfielder Nemanja Gudejl reduced the deficit with a header to the near post.
From then on, Sevilla were more active, but the game was very patchy, which prevented them from getting pressure. At the same time, shots were kept to a minimum until Sergio Ramos headed home in the 88th minute, but too weakly.
In stoppage time, David Raya almost boxed out a cross into his own net, but luckily for him the ball ended up over. Arsenal move into first place in the table, one point ahead of Lens. Sevilla are tied for third with two points.
