Rapid rise, similarly rapid fall. Piatek didn’t save Hertha either, a move to Turkey is in the cards

It wasn’t that long ago. Krzysztof Piatek shot to fame after moving to Italy with Genoa and was bought by the famous AC Milan six months later. But he couldn’t save him. He was bought by Hertha as a potential starter, but he doesn’t shine there either. Now he is expected to be on his way out.

Krzysztof Piatek flew into adult football very well. He hasn’t scored that many goals in a Zaglebie Lubin jersey, but as soon as he transferred to Cracovia he started scoring goal after goal. He scored over 30 goals in two seasons and asked for a transfer to the Italian league.

He was bought out by Genoa in the summer of 2018 for less than 5 million euros. It was a hugely beneficial move for the club. He scored in his first seven league games in a row, and in total he netted 19 goals in 22 games in the first half of the season.

Everything looked like a new attacking star was being born for Poland, who would one day take over the reins from Robert Lewandowski. Piatek was even bought by the famous AC Milan for 35 million euros right after six months in Genoa.

A beautiful fairy tale was written, however, the Polish striker did not follow up his goalscoring exploits in the Rossoneri jersey. In fact, he finished the season very solidly, scoring 9 more league goals, but the new season was in a completely different spirit.

Piatek burned a lot of chances, he didn’t do well, he didn’t have the expected contribution to the team. So in January he changed his jersey again. After a year. This time, Hertha Berlin bought him for 24 million in January 2020.

The Polish striker was supposed to be one of the main driving forces and key players of the new era. Hertha was buying expensive players, there were words from Berlin about trying to build a club that would compete with Bayern. But despite massive investment, this has not been achieved. On the contrary. Hertha was in a bad way.

And so it was with Piatek. In the first season he scored 5 competitive goals in 16 games, in the second he scored 7 goals in 33 games.

This year, he’s at his worst ever. Even with injuries he hasn’t played much, but even healthy he can’t break into the lineup of a struggling team. He has scored 1 goal in 10 games.

According to Transfermarkt, his value is around 15 million euros, so it is obvious that as AC Milan made a profit on him, Hertha will also make a profit on his purchase. Quite possibly this will happen already in the winter.

Galatasaray are interested in the Polish striker. However, at the age of 26, he can still kick-start his career. It’s not too late. He still has solid numbers in the national team. He scored 9 goals in 21 games for Poland. Not bad for backing up Lewandowski.

Can Piatek still show the world that he’s up to it?
