Rapid Vienna are out of the Champions League after losing at Letná. They will have to fight for their place in Europe. The result of the first match gave the Austrian team some hope. The disappointment of the fans, who are venting their anger on social media, is even greater.
It’s not easy for the Vienna Rapid fans. They are the most successful Austrian team, having won the league title in 32 seasons. But the last time that happened was in 2008.
Since then, the club has finished in the middle of the table several times, but otherwise has to settle for third or second place in the league at best. Salzburg is now the king of Austria.
That’s why the fans of the famous club hoped that their beloved Rapid could make a dent in Europe. But now it is certain that it will not be in the Champions League. Sparta from Prague have seen them off.
And the fans are not taking it well. They see the relegation as a disgrace and would like to fire current coach Dietmar Kühbauer. Others see the problem more in the weak squad at the coach’s disposal.
“To be honest, both teams played damn badly. But Sparta at least had the desire and the will to win. Rapid did not show anything at all,” said one of the fans on the club’s social media.
“Incredibly embarrassing performance. To present like that in the Champions League? Sparta weren’t very good. Thanks for nothing,” read another moderate comment.
Fans who have supported the club for over 20 years also commented. According to them, the situation is getting worse every year. Besides, they don’t understand the transfer policy when Rapid sells its best players and fails to bring adequate replacements in their place.
But besides that, there was another interesting question: ‘Why do other teams in the league manage to get top youngsters from the German, English or Italian leagues on loan? Why not us? The others certainly don’t have the same budget. It’s sad. Our players don’t wear the Rapid jersey with pride.”
So now Rapid will have to prove themselves in the Europa League, where they will face Famagusta of Cyprus. The first match will be played in a week’s time.
