Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy faces nine sex crime charges. He must defend himself in court on charges of seven counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault. He has now spoken for the first time at Chester Crown Court.

Benjamin Mendy had it all. He lived a childhood dream, made it as a footballer on one of the best teams in the world, won the World Cup with his native France. He was earning money he wouldn’t spend in his lifetime.

But his behaviour probably threw it all away. He’s been in custody for months awaiting trial for alleged rape. Now he’s spoken for the first time. He told a court in Chester, England, that it was easy for him to have sex with women because they were so attached to him as a footballer.

“I know I’m not Brad Pitt, but women were after me. Not because of how I look, but because I’m a footballer,” Mendy, who swore on the Koran, Islam’s holy religious book, told the court. Since he moved to Manchester City, he said, interest from women has increased tenfold.

It’s no news that women are falling for famous and rich footballers. But the important thing to sort out is whether the rape actually took place or whether the sex was consensual.

Sex with many women

Mendy admitted that he went to the club two to three times a week and met a lot of women, bringing several of them to his €5.4m (£5.4m) mansion in Prestbury.

“I enjoyed the house, I enjoyed the women. I was so happy to be in Manchester City, so excited,” says Mendy.

The defendant’s lawyer asked the 28-year-old footballer why he had sexual relationships with women he barely knew, which Mendy explained as follows.

“I was honest about what I wanted and what they wanted. I wasn’t thinking at that moment that they might get upset. If they wanted sex and I wanted sex, then everything was fine. I continued with my party. I enjoyed sex with many women,” Mendy explained.

There was also a clear question from the lawyer about how Mendy would have reacted if the woman had said no. “If my wife said no, I would accept it. I like to have sex with someone who enjoys it too,” the Frenchman defended himself.

How long is the jail term?

Mendy did not just focus on one woman during his spectacular parties at his luxury villa. He managed several a night.

“Sleeping with several women a night seemed normal. But now I realise it sounds strange,” Mendy was quoted as saying.

the 28-year-old Citizens player, however, maintains that all sexual relations were consensual and denies guilt on all counts.

And what is Mendy facing? If proven guilty, the Frenchman faces between 5-20 years in prison. However, he could also face life imprisonment.
