Cagliari have been relegated for a long time, but have been in excellent form of late, picking up wins and draws apart from the defeat to Monza in March. The last one came against Juventus. But coach Claudio Ranieri knows full well that three points were not far away.
Cagliari had been dragging a losing streak behind them, but the upturn came in mid-February and thanks to that they are no longer in relegation waters. Moreover, they have shown quality against the top teams in Serie A recently.
Claudio Ranieri’s Atalanta beat Atalanta 2-1 at home, drew at Inter and took a point at home to Juventus on Friday. Valuable before the game, but bitter afterwards, as they lost three points at the very end just after the 2: 2 draw.
The result did not please coach Ranieri in the end, after all, every point is useful in the fight for retention. But Ranieri admitted after the game that although the goal could have been prevented, his team basically could not have done more.
“Until the referee blows the whistle, Juventus is never finished. It’s a shame because the two goals we got could have easily been prevented. But honestly, we couldn’t have done more,” Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia.
All in all, he can be happy with the latest results. His team has come into excellent form and the lead over Frosinone is five points, although the 18th Serie A team has one game to play.
“If someone had told us that we would get five points from this run of games, we wouldn’t have believed them. Now we have to keep fighting because we don’t have certainty yet and we need to improve certain things,” added the coach, who won the Premier League title with Leicester.
Cagliari has five games left to play in Serie A, which includes a trip to Genoa, a home game against Lecce, away games against AC Milan and Sassuolo and a home game against Fiorentina in the last round.
