Aaron Ramsey is a big football star. When he played for Arsenal in the Premier League, he was one of the best players in his team. But at Juventus, he didn’t get as many opportunities. So he has been making up for it in the Wales national team, where he always shines alongside Gareth Bale.
Since the beginning of January, many clubs have been interested in the 31-year-old midfielder’s services, especially from the Premier League. In the end, however, he chose to go on loan to Rangers. According to the island’s media, the Scottish club has also arranged a permanent transfer option with Juventus.
Interestingly, Ramsey turned down former Rangers coach Steven Gerrard, who now leads Aston Villa. It was Gerrard who was very keen on Ramsey, he even claimed to the media that when the skilful Welshman is fit, he is the best offensive midfielder in the Premier League.
However, the flattering words did not lead to his acquisition. Why did the former Arsenal player choose Rangers in the first place?
“I am thrilled to be joining Rangers. We have a lot to look forward to. I had a number of offers on the table, but none matched the size of this club, which also plays in Europe and regularly attracts over 50,000 fans,” Ramsey told the club’s website.
The Wales international praised his talks with the club’s management, among other things. Fans are celebrating his arrival in a big way. Of course, there will be a lot of pressure on him, but he should be able to cope with that.
The question in Scotland then is whether this transfer proves that Rangers are a bigger club than Celtic, who failed to snap up a similarly big name.
It is against Celtic, moreover, that Ramsey may make his debut. The Old Firm Derby is on the schedule for Wednesday.
