Rafael Nadal dominates the Grand Slams, but Jimmy Connors has won the most titles. Can the Spaniard or Novak Djokovic surpass him?
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have already broken many records. Jimmy Connors, however, holds a record that quite possibly none of these phenomenal tennis players will break, namely the number of tournaments won. Who is closest to breaking it?
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have already broken many records. Jimmy Connors, however, holds a record that quite possibly none of these phenomenal tennis players will break, namely the number of tournaments won. Who is closest to breaking it?
Jimmy Connors may not have stayed and is not in the minds of so many sports fans, but his name certainly deserves attention. In his time, he was one of the best tennis players in the world, having been world number one nine times, first reaching the top spot in 1974.
It was in 1974 that the American tennis player managed to dominate three Grand Slam tournaments, becoming at that time only the second tennis player in the open-era to do so. Overall, he won eight Grand Slam titles in his career, once dominating the Tournament of Champions.
Of the Grand Slams, Connors has only failed to conquer the French Open, however, he still holds a record that just can’t be beaten. In fact, he has won a hard-to-believe 109 tournaments, a mark not even reached by players like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic.
Can anyone beat Connors?
Although Rafael Nadal now reigns supreme in the Grand Slam rankings, having won 21 Grand Slams, while Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic boast 20 Grand Slam trophies. However, in terms of trophies won overall, Federer is the best after Connors.
As already mentioned, Connors has won 109 tournaments in his career, and only the Swiss tennis player has surpassed 100 (103 titles). Nadal is so far at 90 tournaments won, Djokovic has conquered 86 of them.
All of the aforementioned are far from surpassing Connors. Federer in particular, due to increasingly frequent health problems, which also limit his performances. Nadal is also not exactly 100 percent health-wise, he has to carefully consider what tournaments to participate in and cannot be expected to play for much longer.
Djokovic has the best chance, but even his hopes are not very high. His life will still be made difficult by Nadal, but besides that, Daniil Medvedev is coming to the top and he can compete with these phenomena with his performances. However, it can be said that Djokovic has the longest career ahead of him out of the trio of legends mentioned above and therefore his chances are the greatest, but not great.
