Qualifying in Assen was dominated by Yamahas! What does the starting grid look like?
Moto GP qualifying for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix is behind us. The dominant performance at the Assen circuit was confirmed by the Yamahas, but the power distribution of the entire grid looks really interesting.
Moto GP qualifying for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix is behind us. The dominant performance at the Assen circuit was confirmed by the Yamahas, but the power distribution of the entire grid looks really interesting.
The first part of qualifying at the Assen circuit was tragic for Marc Márquez. The Spanish Repsol Honda rider crashed at the end of Q1 in turn nine and was unable to improve his qualifying time.
Márquez’s bad luck this season continues with this crash. Apart from the last race in Germany, when he traditionally dominated the Sachsenring, he has failed to finish in the three previous races.
He will therefore start Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix from 20th position ahead of Brad Binder and Garrett Gerloff, a MotoGP rookie who has been given a chance with the Yamaha team.
Nineteenth on the start list we find Enea Bastianini, eighteenth Danilo Petrucci and seventeenth Luca Marini. Sixteenth on the grid will be Alex Márquez in the service of the LCR Honda team.
Fifteenth on the grid will be Lorenzo Savadori on an Aprilia motorcycle. Jorge Martin is the fourteenth man in the order, with Iker Lecuona starting thirteenth. However, the twenty-one-year-old Spaniard is not performing too dazzlingly in the team’s service, which has also been noticed by the team’s sponsors.
According to the information so far, it is almost certain that Lecuona will move back to the lower Moto 2 category.
However, both Ducati’s Johann Zarco and Francesco Bagnaia advanced to the second and final part of qualifying. And it was in the second part of the race that we saw another crash, this time involving Suzuki Ecstar rider Alex Rins.
The 25-year-old Spaniard crashed at Turn 8, when he leaned his bike too much and as a result Rins’ front end closed up. Rins will therefore start Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix from seventh place.
Behind him we find Australian Jack Miller in eighth position, with Aleix Espargaro ninth on the start list, Joan Mir tenth, Pol Espargaro eleventh and the legendary Valentino Rossi twelfth.
Ahead of Rins we find Miguel Oliveira in sixth place, who has been in terrific form in the championship so far. Fifth place in qualifying went to Zarco in the service of the Pramac Racing team, with Takaaki Nakagami starting fourth.
Miller’s teammate Bagnaia took the third starting position. The first two positions at the start belong to the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team, with Maverick Viñales taking pole position in the Netherlands!
Viñales not only confirmed his incredible form at this circuit in qualifying, he won three of the four practice sessions throughout the race weekend! But the Spanish driver also confirmed his team’s form, with Fabio Quartararo starting in second position behind him.
The French driver complemented Viñales with another remaining win in the last practice session. The twenty-six-year-old Spaniard not only took pole position, but broke the historic track time record with a time of 1.31::814!
Sunday’s race is scheduled for 26 laps, and judging by the line-up of the starting grid, we’re in for a very interesting Dutch Grand Prix at the Assen circuit, so don’t miss it!
