Qualification for the upcoming Champions League season starts on Tuesday, with Pjunik Yerevan taking on Cluj in the Champions League. What to expect from the match between the Armenian champion and the Romanian and what to bet on?
Pyunik dominated last year’s Armenian league by a single point. It has minimal experience of European cups, which makes it all the more strange that it has not played a single pre-season friendly before Tuesday’s game.
Cluj rolled through the Romanian league’s regular season, but a failed extra session resulted in them securing the title in the penultimate round. They did not underestimate the preparation, winning all four friendlies, for example beating Partizan Belgrade (1:0).
The home team also lost its top three scorers, so the responsibility will fall on the experienced Armenian international Hovhannes Harutyunyan, who scored four times last season and assisted on four more.
On the away side, Ciprian Deac is still productive at the age of thirty-six, scoring twelve times and assisting fifteen last year. Croatian forward Gabriel Debeljuh scored nineteen goals and assisted on one.
Pjunik struggled at the end of the season, scoring only three times in the last three rounds. And it still had the aforementioned offensive mainstays in the lineup.
And it will be difficult against Cluj, the Romanian champion hasn’t scored for seven games in a row.
Considering the defensive form of Cluj and the successful preparation, I think the visitors will win and score at least two goals.
