Toulouse had no chance to defy a rampant PSG
Paris Saint Germain entered the Super Cup match as the clear favourite and fulfilled it from the start. In the third minute, Kang-In Lee scored. It was the fastest goal scored in the competition since 2005.
The second and final goal was scored by Kylian Mbappé shortly before the end of the first half. It was the 22nd goal for the French striker this season across all competitions.
Toulouse picked up the pace in the second half. However, it was not enough for an honourable success. Gianluigi Donnarumma made some good saves to keep the clean sheet.
The Parisians score their 12th triumph, Toulouse don’t make history
After the 2-0 victory, PSG players were able to celebrate the Super Cup trophy. It was the 12th time the Parisians had won the Trophée des Champions. No other team has achieved so much success. Second place belongs to Lyon with eight Super Cups.
This is only the second time Toulouse has won the Super Cup in its history. The first time was in 1957, when it lost to St-Etienne. The second attempt was also unsuccessful, as the team was unable to beat the upstart PSG.
In the next edition of the Trophée des Champions we will most likely see the Parisian team again, as they once again dominate Ligue 1. The French Cup has not even advanced to the final stages yet, so the runner-up is hard to predict.
