PSG’s star-studded club is having a bad season
French club Paris Saint-Germain, which is loaded with the biggest stars in world football, is experiencing a failed season despite a galactic offensive line-up. Despite the addition of seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi to the already stellar Neymar-Mbappé attacking duo before the season, the Parc des Princes club is already struggling on one front.
As we have already informed you, the Parisian side crashed out of the millionaire Champions League in the week already in the eighth-finals, falling to Real Madrid after a well-played double-header. To make matters worse, Mauricio Pochettino’s team crashed out of the domestic cup in January and lost in the French Super Cup before the season.
In the domestic league, although the Parisian club already dominates the Ligue 1 table with a 15-point lead over second-placed Nice, the club’s pre-season goals were much bigger and the fans take winning the league as a must given the quality of the squad. It is for this reason that critical voices are already being heard from the club’s supporters at this point in the season, which is not yet over.
President Khelaifi should resign, reads a statement from Ultras fans
The core of the Collective Ultras Paris has issued a statement in which the fans have called on president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to resign from his post immediately. “The unacceptable and inevitable disappointment we feared and anticipated has unfortunately come to pass,” the Ultras fans’ statement on their Twitter account begins.
The Parisian club has been accused of playing games at a pedestrian pace in the domestic league this season, and a team full of stars simply isn’t enough to take on more consolidated teams with a team concept. “How can you have a real game plan when your team is nothing but a group of ‘stars’ that barely complement each other,” the Ultras statement continues.
“How can a coach be a respected leader of the bench when he is clearly not the one who actually makes the decisions,” the fans point out that coach Pochettino does not make the sporting decisions at the club.
“We don’t have short memories and we know what we owe to president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, but it is clear that he is not the man for the job,” they demand the immediate resignation of the club boss. “The current situation of the club requires a complete reorganisation at all levels for the future and the daily presence of its president,” alluding to the international and political activities of their president.
Nasser Al-Khelaifi took over the club’s stewardship under new owners Qatar Sports Investments and oversaw the club’s massive spending on the biggest stars in world football. Real Madrid’s team performance showed the weaknesses of the Parisian outfit and advanced through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Al-Khelaifi took the loss very hard. As we reported earlier in the week, after the final whistle at the Santiago Bernabéu he tried to storm the referees’ dressing room and even allegedly threatened to kill a member of the Spanish club’s staff. UEFA are already investigating the case and Al-Khelaifi is in for some tough times.
