Nasser Al-Khelaifi is in big trouble. The PSG owner is currently under investigation for kidnapping and torture. Three Paris courts are set to hear charges against the PSG president for alleged crimes committed on Qatari soil a few months ago.
The French judiciary has finally named three courts to deal with the charges that have been hanging over PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi for several months for the alleged kidnapping and torture of Tayeb Benabderrahmane, a French-Algerian citizen who regularly does business in the Middle East.
“We are very pleased that the prosecution of this story is finally being investigated by the French justice system, ” Maîtres lawyers Romain Ruiz and Gabriel Vejnar, who are responsible for Benabderrahmane’s legal defence, told L’Equipe in a statement.
French media have confirmed reports of an investigation into the PSG president, one of Qatar’s most influential men in the world of sport. Indeed, Benabderrahmane’s accusations would be directed specifically at his person.
According to L’Equipe, the Frenchman with Algerian roots claims he was kidnapped and tortured in Qatar for several months in 2020. He was only released after signing a confidentiality agreement to prevent compromising documents of Al-Khelaifi from coming to light.
Benabderrahmane was in possession of documents implicating PSG’s owners in the sale of TV rights for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups, a plot that allegedly involved Jerôme Valcke, the former FIFA secretary general.
Developing influence
Al-Khelaifi became president of PSG in 2011. He has gradually increased his influence in European football and is also heavily connected to the FIFA organisation and its president Gianni Infantino.
He was already investigated once last season, but only by UEFA. After PSG’s defeat against Real Madrid, according to CCTV footage and referees’ statements, he was supposed to have stormed into the referee’s booth, broke the flag and assaulted the referee, and also threatened one of the Madrid staff with death.
After an investigation, UEFA, “surprisingly”, cleared him of all charges as if nothing had happened. But the investigation by the French justice system will be a different story.
