Champions League
PSG or Barcelona? Who would Pavel Bucha and coach Bílek like to see in the Champions League?
What no one believed before the start of the season has become a reality. Viktoria Plzeň has made its way through three preliminary rounds and will play in the dream Champions League. Here, it is already looking for famous opponents to take on.
What no one believed before the start of the season has become a reality. Viktoria Plzeň has made its way through three preliminary rounds and will play in the dream Champions League. Here, it is already looking for famous opponents to take on.
In its first participation, Plzen got Barcelona, AC Milan and BATE Borisov in the group. The Catalans in their greatest glory did not get beaten even once, but they did get a point at home (in the Eden Asylum) against AC Milan, even though they were still down 0:2 just before the end. They beat BATE once and drew.
In their second appearance in the elite competition, Plzeň beat Bayern Munich, Manchester City and CSKA Moscow. In this group, Plzen lost all but the last game, beating CSKA 2-1 at home to move up from third place to the Europa League.
In the 2018/19 season, Plzeň faced Real Madrid, AS Roma and again CSKA Moscow in the group stage. They lost both games against the Spanish giants, beating CSKA once and drawing once, and were first beaten 0:5 by the Italian side, but in the return leg Plzeň beat AS Roma 2:1.
Several famous opponents have already come to the Czech Republic to visit Viktoria. Who is missing from the famous ones? For example, PSG, Chelsea, Liverpool, Juventus or Atlético Madrid.
And who would the players themselves like to see? “I have dream opponents, among them Paris, Manchester City or Barcelona. We’ll see, but there are a lot of quality and interesting teams. We’ll be surprised,” midfielder Pavel Bucha mused at the press conference.
“There are such big names in the Champions League that whoever we get will be a great club. I have respect for all of them, that’s why there is no team that I outright wish for,” coach Michal Bílek was more cryptic.
Viktoria will be placed in the fourth basket and can thus look forward to great opponents. And possibly a combo of two star teams, as the second basket will include Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona or Juventus.
