PSG is technically and tactically dead, French press slams star-studded team
It was supposed to be the best season in the club’s history, but PSG fans have no reason to cheer in recent days after their beloved team failed to beat one of the weakest teams in Ligue 1 in the last game of the year.
It was supposed to be the best season in the club’s history, but PSG fans have no reason to cheer in recent days after their beloved team failed to beat one of the weakest teams in Ligue 1 in the last game of the year.
To make matters worse, the leading team in the top French league has been targeted by the press, who would have expected much more from such a star-studded team than what it has been showing in recent days.
French journalists took PSG to task after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with second-to-last-placed Lorient. Mauro Icardi saved an extra point in stoppage time.
Mauricio Pochettino’s charges dropped points for the third time in the last four league games, drawing with Nice and Lens in addition to Lorient.
“PSG is the flagship of our league, but to be honest, there is nothing to say about their performance. Technically and tactically it’s dead and the players themselves look like they don’t care at all,” commented journalist Daniel Riolo on the appalling performance. And he is not alone, you could find many similar comments.
However, despite these losses, PSG are leading the league with a clear lead, with second placed Nice and third placed Marseille 13 points behind. PSG’s stars will now be rested and won’t return to the pitch until January 3, when they face Vannes in the Coupe de France.
Six days later, they will face a slightly tougher game when they visit Lyon. After that, they will tune up their form for the next four league games against Real Madrid.
Although the Parisians managed to win 3:0 at home against the White Ballet in the autumn of 2019 and drew 2:2 in Madrid, it was Real who moved on after two wins in the spring of 2018.
Moreover, Carlo Ancelotti’s charges have been doing well recently and there is no doubt about their Champions League experience. If we then take into account PSG’s bored players, we can expect nothing but another shameful elimination, after which the criticism of Pochettino and co. will be much greater.
Star names alone have never won anything. Unless the discipline is right, no team can succeed in today’s football. And judging by what is leaking out of the PSG cabin, there is a huge amount of chaos in the Parisian set-up, which they could and very likely will end up paying for.
