A phenomenal battle, one of the best title fights in history and quite possibly the fight of the year. Jiri Prochazka was able to defeat Glover Teixeira and become the UFC welterweight champion. We’ll see what happens next. But let’s take a look at the stats.
Prochazka did go on to fight for the title, but there was still an imaginary curse at play. Only David Dvorak had three wins in the UFC before him. Besides him, neither Karlos Vémola, Lucie Pudilová or Viktor Pešta could do it. So now “BJP” has another milestone in front of him – to be the first to have four fights.
He himself had only two wins. Moreover, he carried the weight of the entire Czechoslovak scene. But he finally broke through and made it. The third win also means the aforementioned title, which is of course fantastic.
He is the first fighter from our country to achieve such a success. Besides, he is the first fighter after the legendary Jon Jones to win the welterweight belt before his 30th birthday. Both Blachowicz and Teixeira are considerably older.
Walk is now the 15th undisputed UFC welterweight champion. In addition, by ending the fight with 28 seconds left, he secured the second-late finish to a title fight. Only Demetrious Johnson ended a title fight later in 2015.
It’s worth noting then that while Prochazka was the favorite across the board, if anything, he was expected to win by knockout. Extremely high odds were written on him winning the submission.
Among other things, Prochazka became the first fighter ever to defeat Teixeira on a submission. The Brazilian lost only the eighth fight of his career, winning the other 33. He has fallen three times by KO/TKO, four times on points and now for the first time on a submission.
To make matters worse, Verdict, a company that specializes in assessing the likelihood of winning in the MMA world, released a crazy statistic. Walk’s win on a submission is the least likely prediction ever made in the company’s history.
According to the company, there was only a 0.02% chance that Prochazka would win on a fifth round submission. And it did! In short, a phenomenal feat.
