It’s home! Jiri Prochazka was the first fighter from the Czech Republic to not only appear in a UFC title fight, but also to win it by defeating Brazilian veteran Glover Teixeira.
The biggest fight in the history of Czechoslovak MMA. Jiri Prochazka fought for the UFC title after two dominant wins. He is the first ever fighter from the Czech Republic to accomplish such a feat.
However, there would be several firsts on offer. He is the first fighter from our country to appear in the main event of a numbered UFC tournament. Now we also know that he is the first our fighter who managed to win more than two fights in the UFC and become a champion!
The first round was very wild, with Teixeira not wanting to stick with Prochazka in the standup too much. But when the fight did go to the ground, or the Brazilian got to the Moravian fighter’s back, Procházka was always able to slip out of it.
The second round was mostly stance, with Procházka making Teixeira a downright target at several points. At the end of the round, however, the Brazilian took him down and managed to land a laceration above his eye.
The third round was mostly standing as well. Walk was much better conditioned, and got Teixeira in trouble many times when he didn’t even have the power to take the fight to the ground. However, Procházka followed him to the ground at the end of the round just to try and finish him off with punches. He even tried to put on a choke, but in doing so Teixeira reversed the position.
The fourth round, however, went to the ground very quickly. Teixeira tried to set up two submissions for Prochazka. One appeared to be perfectly caught, but the Moravian fighter didn’t flinch in either situation and was able to get into a dominant position both times, where he tried to end the fight again. Teixeira, however, showed tremendous stamina.
The fifth round started with a heart attack. Teixeira hit Procházka very hard several times and when it looked like the Moravian was shaken up he tried for a guillotine, luckily it didn’t work and Procházka could breathe a sigh of relief. Still, he cashed in again in the stand-up after that and the Brazilian was in full mount.
Walk escaped again, though. He reversed the situation, hinted at a crucifix and finally finished Teixeira shortly before the end of the fifth round on the Brazilian’s favourite technique, the rear-naked choke.
The Moravian fighter thus became the new UFC welterweight champion after an incredible battle!
And was he satisfied with his performance after the win? No way. “I’ll be better next time,” promised Prochazka in his post-fight cage interview.
