The winter transfer window in the Premier League this year offered some very interesting events. Chelsea smashed the piggy bank, Liverpool gambled on youth, Arsenal went for it smartly and the management of Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United saved money.

Where else to start but with the record-breaking transfer deal that Chelsea took care of. Chelsea laid down a whole £105million on the woodwork to buy young Argentine Enzo Fernandez from Benfica Lisbon.

He performed brilliantly at the World Cup in Qatar, replacing Jack Grealish, who moved from Aston Villa to Manchester City for an outright £100m, on the imaginary transfer throne. We discussed Chelsea’s other signings in an article that looks at how Chelsea spent more than the biggest European leagues combined.

Liverpool kept a low profile and only got one signing, which was young Dutch player Cody Gakpo. He cost Liverpool £45m which went to PSV Eindhoven. The Reds did not make any other signings, so coach Klopp will have to make do with the current squad for the rest of the season.

Arsenal did not make any staggeringly expensive purchases, but they brought in three interesting signings. He bought Leandro Trossard from Brighton for £21m. This is a winger who will provide an important alternative to Arteta. The second purchase was Jakub Kiwior from Spezia for £21m.

This young defender is above all an investment for the future. The last signing was Jorginho from Chelsea for £10 million. This player will be an important and quality replacement for Partey and Xhaka in case of injury.

Tottenham only brought in young Jude Soonsup-Bell from Chelsea on a permanent basis for between £300,000 and £600,000. Otherwise, the Roosters did not strengthen and this was also a point of contention between Conte and the management, as Conte expected more activity in the transfer market.

At United, they forgave themselves for expensive purchases and at City they only reached for young Argentine Maxi Perron, who was expected to cost them around £8m.

The January transfer window was full of contrasts for the Premier League’s top clubs, with Chelsea in particular outshining virtually all of them. But we’ll see if the frantic buying or saving pays off in the next few games.
