Premier League: Three smaller clubs that deserve our attention in the second half of the season
This year’s Premier League is almost halfway through. It has offered us plenty of surprises, like the travails of Liverpool and Chelsea. The unexpected dominance of Arsenal and the rise of Newcastle. The title fight will be on everyone’s radar.
This year’s Premier League is almost halfway through. It has offered us plenty of surprises, like the travails of Liverpool and Chelsea. The unexpected dominance of Arsenal and the rise of Newcastle. The title fight will be on everyone’s radar. But there are smaller clubs whose stories deserve our attention.
If we look at the table of the English top flight, we’ll see many surprises. Who would have guessed before the season started that we would see Everton and West Ham in the relegation places? Leicester are also just two points off the relegation places.
Liverpool and Chelsea are also going through the trouble of being in ninth and tenth positions. On the other hand, Arsenal and Newcastle are well above expectations, and together with Manchester City they are likely to duke it out for the championship title.
Throughout the season, we have also had the opportunity to watch three very interesting, smaller and likeable clubs, which are definitely worth watching in the future. Who are they?
Nottingham Forrest
A traditional club and a newcomer to the competition. They have taken the fight for survival really seriously in the management and have already signed over twenty new players before and during the season. Among them were interesting names like Lingard, Aurier and Renan Lodi.
The club spent over 161 million euros on new signings. But names do not guarantee success, as they are aware here
It was a huge risk. Basically a complete change of squad. Nottingham were logically struggling at the start of the season and were in relegation positions all the time. Recently, however, things seem to be settling down and Nottingham have climbed out of the relegation places.
After the recently concluded World Cup they celebrated reaching the semi-finals of the League Cup, taking points off Chelsea and most recently beating Leicester 2-0. Nottingham will certainly be interesting to watch.
Will the new faces play even more and will Nottingham secure their Premier League salvation? Can they surprise in the League Cup and challenge to win it? There is plenty to look forward to.
Brighton & Hove Albion FC
This club from the coastal city of Brighton has come a long way in recent years. From a club that was at the bottom of the table and regularly struggling for salvation, it is now a club that has ambitions to challenge for cup places and can take on England’s biggest clubs
The credit for this undoubtedly goes to current Chelsea coach Graham Potter. At the moment, Brighton are only three points away from the fifth position that guarantees promotion to the Europa League.
The Seagulls have beaten Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. Brighton are displaying a likeable game and one of the nicest of the entire Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi is doing a great job. He has built on the progression the club made under Graham Potter perfectly. Promotion to Europe would be a huge achievement for the club and a reward for the way they have performed.
Fulham FC
Another newcomer to the competition, but one that is doing much better than the likes of Nottingham Forrest. Fulham are currently behind fifth-placed Tottenham with a two-point deficit.
They are certainly a huge surprise this season. The performance of this traditional club must please every football fan
Fulham have not shied away from the competition. It has perfectly and sensitively added new faces to the squad and, like Brighton, it presents itself with nice active football led by its goal scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The Serbian currently has eleven goals to his name, making him the fourth top scorer of the current campaign.
Even in the case of Fulham, it will be interesting to see how the newcomer performs in the rest of the season and whether he will steal promotion to the European Cups in his first season after being promoted to the elite.
