Premier League team introductions: Tottenham’s positioning will depend on the situation around Kane

Tottenham have had two different half seasons. In the first one he was rolling one opponent after another and dominating the league table, in the second one he was losing points like on a treadmill and was glad that he didn’t lose the European Conference League in the last round. How will he do this year?

Tottenham’s performances, results and overall position in the table will depend on how the situation around Harry Kane, who would like to finally win a major trophy and is hoping for a transfer, develops.

This, of course, makes the job harder for Nuno Espirito Santo, the new Spurs head coach. The Portuguese strategist himself said in an interview that if Harry doesn’t want to fight for the club, he wishes he too would leave.

However, it cannot be said that Santo acted accordingly in the transfer market. The only reinforcement in the offensive line is Sevilla’s talent Bryan Gil, while Carlos Vinícius, Gareth Bale and Erik Lamela, a trio of wingers and strikers respectively, have left the club.

According to information, Tottenham management is planning to bring Lautaro Martínez. That would be a fantastic, but also a very expensive patch for the hole left by Kane.

The other Belgian icon after Jan Vertonghen has also left the squad, stopper Toby Alderweireld has decided to sign in Qatar. Argentine Cristian Romero comes in as a replacement. You may remember him from this year’s Copa América, where he was one of the best in his position.

Pierluigi Gollini will also be a guest from Atalanta next season, who should cover the back of captain Hugo Lloris.

The squad as a whole looks somewhat unpredictable. The aforementioned leader Alderweireld has left the defensive line, Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier are at right back and cannot be relied upon in the long term.

Santo’s midfield is top notch, he doesn’t need to invest in it. Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg were not only mainstays last year.

The attack can’t be assessed yet, as its composition is still unclear. All that is certain is that Spurs fans will rely on the skills of Heung-Min Son even more than in previous seasons.

We’ll see how Son and co. perform under the new coach. Let’s not forget that Santo won the Europa League two years ago with a mediocre Wolverhampton squad and now he will have a much better selection at his disposal.
