Premier League Player of the Season: Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah in the nomination

The Premier League has published a shortlist of candidates for the best player of the 2021/22 season.Kevin de Bruyne of Manchester City and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool are among the eight nominees. We also learned the nominations for coach of the season and best young player.

This year’s Premier League season is slowly coming to an end and with it comes the traditional voting for the best player of the season. Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah could pick up their second awards as they won the 2019/20 and 2017/18 seasons respectively. The Liverpool striker has already picked up one personal accolade this season, having secured the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year title earlier this month.

Player of the Season

The eight-man nomination is dominated by the interim king of goalscorers and assists, Mohamed Salah, and neither second Son Heung-Min. Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is not missing either.

Defenders Joao Cancelo and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrod Bowen, Bukayo Saka and James Ward-Prowse complete the star-studded nomination. This means there is no place left on the list for last year’s winner Ruben Dias.

Young Player of the Season

Declan Rice, Mason Mount and Phil Foden are among the eight players in the running for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award.

Saka and Alexander-Arnold are shortlisted for both Player and Young Player of the Season, with Conor Gallagher, Tyrick Mitchell and Aaron Ramsdale making up the rest of the nominees.

Coach of the Season

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are not missing from the five-man shortlist for the Barclays Manager of the Season title.

Alongside them, Patrick Vieira, Eddie Howe and Thomas Frank are up for the award, which is decided by an online vote and a panel of football experts.

Guardiola and Klopp continue to battle each other for the Premier League title this season and once again, it looks like City and Liverpool will take the title fight to the final day of the season for the second time in just four years.

The fans themselves can vote for the best player of the season on the official Premier League website until May 16. The winner will be decided by a fan vote along with the votes of the captains of the 20 clubs and a panel of ‘football experts’.
