The first round of the Premier League is over. It featured a goal by Czech international Tomas Soucek, a surprising win for Brentford against Arsenal and a big win for Manchester United against Leeds. What interesting things to remember from this weekend?
The most expensive team in history
Manchester City still had the widest and best squad of any team in the league last year, but the transfer of Jack Grealish has increased its value even further. The most expensive squad in Premier League history even took the field at Tottenham on Saturday.
The paradox is that the £530 million worth of players didn’t even give Tottenham a goal without Harry Kane, what’s more, they even lost. The 0-1 scoreline was decided by a beautiful goal from Heung-Min Son.
The atmosphere after the London derby
Brentford finally managed to get promoted from the cursed second league last year and sweetened their return to the elite with a 2: 0 win over Arsenal, which few expected and it should be noted that the home fans had a big part in it.
But the best moment came after the final whistle. The crowd started singing the famous song “Hey, Jude”, which echoed throughout the stadium. You could tell it was the first Premier League appearance for this small club in 74 years.
Manchester United midfielders concert
Manchester United is one of the favourites for the title again this year and they entered the new season in the best way they could. The 5-1 win against a troublesome Leeds United was further spiced up by two superb individual performances.
Bruno Fernandes’ hat-trick showed that he was unaffected by the Euro debacle. Paul Pogba did something even rarer, he managed to pass for four goals.
Vardy, on the rise
Leicester also added three points to the table in the first round. Its clash with Wolverhampton was decided by a single goal scored by none other than Jamie Vardy. And he went to celebrate it in front of the visiting sector by pretending to howl.
The funny thing is, no one can challenge him that it was an insult to the opposition. Because a fox howls like a wolf. He still took a beating from some Wolves fans, but that’s to be expected. In his post-match interview, he revealed that the celebration came to him at the time.
