The upcoming EURO will offer several interesting young talents. Some are already better known, but Portugal brings one diamond in the rough. Nuno Mendes, Sporting’s 18-year-old left back, could be sold to one of the big clubs at the championship.
Nuno Mendes, remember that name. Because in the coming months, there will be a huge scramble for this 18-year-old in the transfer market. Potential suitors? Manchester City, Barcelona, PSG, Bayern. A truly elite selection. His buyout clause is 70 million euros.
The young footballer is from Sporting Lisbon, where he’s been since he was ten. He went through all the categories up to the A-team, where he played 9 league games last year at the age of 17.
This season, coach Ruben Amorim has already included him in the starting line-up, Mendes has played 29 games and with great performances has helped Sporting to the league title after 19 long years.
Nuno Mendes did not escape the attention of Fernando Santos, the coach of the Portuguese national team. He didn’t hesitate to include the super-talented left-back in the EURO nomination. The Sintra native has already started three games in the March World Cup qualifiers and played a full match twice.
the 18-year-old footballer is such an easy wonder. He is incredibly mature for his young age, both technically and physically, often outperforming even his teammates. When Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first career professional goal, Mendes was a year old. Now the Juventus star is his captain for the European Championships.
He started for 10 minutes against Spain in a friendly, and against Israel on Wednesday night he started in the starting lineup. And his performance literally broke the internet. Some wondered who he was, while others marvelled at the incredible talent of the player born in 2002.
In Budapest, Portugal will face Hungary, France and Germany. This immensely talented left-back is certainly one to watch.
