- He also dominated the time trial
- First Giro-Tour double since 1998
Pogačar’s total domination
Tadej Pogačar never gave his rivals a chance in the final time trial, which appeared on the Tour de France itinerary at the end of the race for the first time since 2020. And here again the Slovenian phenomenon won. He beat his biggest rivals Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel by more than a minute.
It was Evenepoel who avenged his defeat from the opening time trial in this race. The Slovenian celebrated his sixth stage win and his 17th overall in the Tour de France. There is no doubt about the clear king of this year’s edition.
In the final stage, which was a time trial of nearly 34 km, Tadej Pogačar carried his coolness into this stage and clearly dominated all the intermediate times, when he continuously increased his lead over his biggest competitors, beating both Evenepoel and Vingegaard by more than one minute.
The first since Pantani to dominate both the Giro and the Tour in the same year
Tadej Pogačar has done what Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali have tried to do. He became the first cyclist since Marco Pantani to win both the Italian Giro and the Tour de France in one year. The last time Marco Pantani did this was in 1998.
Moreover, he won both in an unprecedented way. He dominated the Giro d’Italia by almost 10 minutes and won 6 stages. And in the Tour de France he beat his arch rival Jonas Vingegaard by more than 6 minutes.
He has dominated the last two editions and Pogačar has always finished in second position. And he also won 6 stages here. So after a three-year break, he dominated the famous Tor de France for the third time in his career and went down in history as one of the few cycling history who won a double Giro – Tour in one year.
The question is whether Pogačar will be willing to try to win the Vuelta as well. Not even the legendary cannibal Eddy Merckx won all three Grand Tour events in one year.
