Pochettino officially out of a job. Can new coach Galtier tame PSG’s star-studded squad?
Expectations at PSG have always been the highest for some time now, and the defeat of the Parisian side to Real Madrid in the Champions League eighth-final cost Mauricio Pochettino his place on the bench without any doubt, and today the management officially said goodbye to him. Christophe Galtier is expected to take his place.
Expectations at PSG have always been the highest for some time now, and the defeat of the Parisian side to Real Madrid in the Champions League eighth-final cost Mauricio Pochettino his place on the bench without any doubt, and today the management officially said goodbye to him. Christophe Galtier is expected to take his place, with the official introduction of the new coach expected in the next few days.
Full name Mauricio Roberto Pochettino Trossero was given a chance at PSG after a great job at Tottenham, which he even led to the Champions League final. However, it wasn’t until he was at PSG that he lifted his first trophy above his head, specifically celebrating winning the French Cup and subsequently the Super Cup.
However, in the last season he only won the trophy for the Ligue 1 winner, and was knocked out of the French Cup by his new successor, who was still managing Nice at the time. We have already mentioned the failure in the Champions League.
Pochettino thus leaves PSG with a record of 84 games, 56 wins, 13 draws, 15 losses and a score of 197::89. However, the future of the 50-year-old Argentine is still unknown, but given that it is the beginning of the summer, it is to be expected that some club will try to sign him before the start of the season.
Will Galtier manage a star-studded team led by Messi?
Galtier managed to sensationally win the title with Lille OSC in the 2020/21 season when the Parisian’s reign was once again interrupted after a few years. Last season, he led OGC Nice, with whom he finished 5th in Ligue 1. He also previously served as coach of Saint-Étienne, with whom he won the French League Cup in the 2012/13 season.
The Marseille native, who will celebrate his 56th birthday at the end of the summer, is undoubtedly a very capable coach who has achieved some interesting successes. However, coaching PSG is different when he will have to manage a team full of stars, something that a great many coaches have already found out is not easy.
It is for this reason that Galtier is a rather surprising name. It’s just that excellent coaches don’t exactly flock to PSG either, given the quality of the French league, so he’s probably the best possible option for the club’s management.
But will it be enough to take on Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Manchester City in next year’s millionaire competition? That remains to be seen, the problem is that Galtier will also need time and there is damn little of that at Princes Park!
