Karolina Pliskova won the Czech derby at the Tournament of Champions after a long battle. Although Krejcikova gave her opponent a canary in the first set, she was unable to hold the lead and Pliskova won 2:1 in sets.
The first set of the match was a straightforward affair. Barbora Krejcikova gave her opponent a canary. There was only a slight drama in the opening game, which had to go through three rallies, otherwise Pliskova did not put up any resistance.
However, the same could not be said for the rest of the match. Pliskova started the second set with a clean game and kicked herself to a big turnaround. However, a lost serve in the fifth game was a minor setback, but Pliskova produced a fantastic finish to the second set, winning 6:4 after two straight breaks.
The final third set had to be decided. It was thrilling until the end and there was only one break point. It was Karolina Pliskova who took care of it, when she managed to use the third break point in the last game and thus came to win the match.
Even though Pliskova has two wins in the group, it was unfortunately not enough to advance to the semifinals. Muguruza surprisingly defeated Kontaveit in the follow-up match to advance at the expense of Pliskova.
The Tournament of Champions did not end very well for the Czech tennis players. From the “Czech” group, where two Czech tennis players were assigned, not a single one advanced. Even so, Karolina Pliskova evaluates her performance as successful.
Krejčíková will still be playing doubles at the Tournament of Champions. She and her partner Katerina Siniakova are already assured of reaching the semifinals after two wins.
