Czech tennis player Karolina Pliskova was one of the three Czechs who played in the eighth round of Wimbledon in London. Her opponent was Russia’s Ludmilla Samsonova, the 65th player in the world rankings. And in the match, Pliskova was attacking her first progression to the quarter-finals at a grass-court Grand Slam.

Both players had no trouble holding their serves at the start. But in the third game, the Czech number two was unable to take advantage of a gameball and lost her serve. Samosonova presented an aggressive and active game in the beginning, which was complemented by Pliskova’s errors.

But the Czech managed to recover very quickly and took advantage of a third break point chance in the fourth game. 2::2. And that break put blood in the world number 13’s veins. A few minutes later, she was 5:2 up and on her way to taking the first set.

And after a tug-of-war in the eighth game, Pliskova managed to break back and took the first set 6:2 in 36 minutes. Unforced errors were the deciding factor, with the Russian having 18 in total, twice as many as her more experienced opponent.

Right at the beginning of the set, Pliskova faced a break point, but a series of three great serves gave her a 1:0 lead. And the Czech player certainly didn’t want to stretch her time on court too much.

At 2:1, she took the Russian’s serve again and went confidently on her way to the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam. The first since 2019 and the first ever at Wimbledon.

Under the watchful eye of her husband Michal Hrdlicka and coach Sascha Bajin, Pliskova led 6: 2 and 4: 1 after one hour and two minutes and there was no sign that her 22-year-old opponent would breathe a sigh of relief.

Karolina Pliskova got on serve at 6::1 and 5::3. And when she used her first match point at 40::15, she could rejoice. The Czech has to wait for her opponent. She will be the winner of the match between American Maddison Keys and Swiss Viktorija Golubic.
