Playing this poorly is very depressing! Last American left in the Wimbledon field
Several American tennis players belonged to the group of favorites that was supposed to threaten the best. But the reality is somewhat different, two players from this group dropped out as soon as the Grand Slam started. Frances Tiafoe also said goodbye to the tournament on Sunday. That leaves the last US representative in the Wimbledon title game. And a very unexpected one at that.
Before the action at the All England Club, the Americans were pretty much a force to be reckoned with. In particular, the names of Taylor Fritz, France Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda were highlighted in connection with a possible success at the third Grand Slam of the season.
The elimination of Korda by Jiri Vesely was one of the biggest surprises of the first round of Wimbledon. Fritz only made it one round further this year. The longest journey through the tournament was by Tiafoe. But it ended very ingloriously.
A terrible match with Dimitrov
Tiafoe arrived at this year’s Wimbledon with a fresh title from the grass tournament in Stuttgart in his pocket. He finally broke into the top 10 of the ATP rankings and a lot was expected of him here.
He advanced without losing a set in the first two rounds, but only in his third match at the tournament is Bulgarian Dimitrov a player from the world’s elite 50. He belongs to the middle of the group, yet it was expected to be at least an even match.
It all ended very differently. Dimitrov destroyed the American 6:2, 6:3, 6:2 and is looking forward to the eighth round against Rune. Tiafoe quits in London and looks for reasons why he played such a miserable match.
“Playing this poorly is really very depressing, especially at Wimbledon,” he said after losing the match, according to Eurosport . The American’s belief that he is one of the best players on grass was severely dented.
Tiafoe lost his serve five times in the match. Dimitrov never conceded a break point on his serve. You can’t succeed with numbers like that. Tiafoe knows that, but he doesn’t know the reasons for his failure.
The last soldier in the field
The only US representative in the Wimbledon eight-finals will be an unexpected player. It is the two-meter giant Christopher Eubanks. Until this year, he had never qualified here.
But Wimbledon 2023 will be written in gold in his diary. He’s hit ace after ace, only lost his serve four times and handled the end of sets superbly.
He beat Australian O’Connell three times in the tiebreak. And now he’s going to take on Tsitsipas the Greek. Eubanks has a chance to repeat his Grand Slam best. For the 27-year-old, that’s the quarterfinals of the 2020 US Open.
How far will the Atlanta native take the American flag at this year’s Wimbledon?
