Piqué joked about the reduced salary: I play for four euros! Soon the other captains should join in
Recognition from all over the world has been raining down on Gerard Piqué’s head in recent days. He earned it by drastically reducing his salary in favour of Barcelona, or rather its salary cap.
Recognition from all over the world has been raining down on Gerard Piqué’s head in recent days. He earned it by drastically reducing his salary in favour of Barcelona, or rather its salary cap. Thanks to this move, both summer signings Eric García and Memphis Depay were able to start the opening game of the season. “And it’s only a matter of time before the others join,” the Spanish stopper said.
Barcelona has begun a new, somewhat darkened era. Without money and without Lionel Messi. And so it’s time for the real heartthrobs to show up. Heroes with blue-red blood running through their veins.
Gerard Piqué, Sergi Roberto, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets are definitely among them. It is not for nothing that these four players will take turns wearing the captain’s armband during the new season. After all, their dedication and loyalty almost goes beyond what is called love for the club.
You may have noticed that the first named – Spanish stopper Piqué – has committed himself to an extraordinary step. Barcelona couldn’t register their reinforcements before the start of the season due to La Liga’s financial rules, so to make it possible, he nodded to a very significant reduction in his salary.
It was all the nicer when Gerard Piqué scored the first goal of the new season after a pass from the main summer acquisition Memphis Depay.
But it’s not just him who deserves a medal from the Blaugranas fans. Helping the club by drastically reducing their income is the complete captain’s quartet.
“We just agreed that I would make the move first so that all the players could be registered on the roster for this season. The others should also agree to it, it’s just a matter of time,” Piqué said after a triumphant start to the season.
He is not worried about losing his salary for a while, but is instead cracking jokes. When asked why he started posting on the streaming platform Twitch after games, he replied, “I had to find a part-time job.”
In an interview with popular YouTuber Ibai Llanos, he reacted to an offhand remark about being a multimillionaire with a laugh: “Don’t piss me off! I play for four euros.”
The 34-year-old stopper tries to keep a smile on his face in the cab. He believes the post-Lionel Messi era will bring a lot of positive emotions. “Nothing will be the same. But our mission is to entertain people and fight for them until the last day of the season. Today we took the first step,” he said after an encouraging 4-2 win over Real Sociedad.
And even though he found the departure of the star Argentine hard to deal with, he knows that Barcelona must turn the page and start a new chapter. “I knew him since I was 13 years old. He made each of us a better player. But we simply have to accept his departure, that’s the reality.”
“There are other guys who can replace Messi. Yusuf Demir, Eric García, Ansu Fati. I think the club has a great future,” Piqué said.
