Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka, who battled for the welterweight title in the fall, are now featured at the UFC 300 gala. The Brazilian defended his belt against Jamahal Hill as champion, while the South Moravian native took on Aleksandar Rakic. Will we see a rematch?
Their duel in the fall ended in controversy. Alex Pereira defeated the Moravian samurai at Madison Square Garden, but Jiri Prochazka complained in hindsight that referee Marc Goddard ended the bout prematurely.
BJP was looking for a rematch, a quick one. In vain. The Brazilian didn’t want it. He wanted a new challenge. That was Jamahal Hill at the UFC 300 gala. But he was uncompromisingly shut down in the first round by the former middleweight king and reigning welterweight champion.
The former Rizin and UFC welterweight division champion took on Aleksandar Rakic for a change, picking up the win by stoppage in the second round. Immediately, talk of a rematch began. The reason for that was the fact that Jiri Prochazka was promised by the organization that if he won, his next fight would be a title fight.
But it’s not clear if that will happen. Procházka did say he wanted a title shot even after the win, saying he wanted to fight as soon as possible, but Pereira has a slightly different view on the matter.
Will we see a rematch of Pereira vs Prochazka?
Jiri Prochazka put on a great performance. He even got a $300,000 performance of the night bonus over Alex Pereira. Apparently, he didn’t impress the Brazilian too much. Or was it the other way around? That’s just speculation.
But at the post-tournament press conference, the champion was asked about a possible rematch with the Moravian samurai. The reaction? He doesn’t care, he prefers other opponents he hasn’t fought yet. Magomed Ankalaev, for example.
However, if the UFC is said to be very interested in the fight, then Procházka will get the rematch, as Pereira is willing to nod it off. But if it were up to him, he’d want to fight in his native Brazil in less than a month, preferably at heavyweight.
Speculation has even begun about a possible fight with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.
