Pep Guardiola never wanted Erling Haaland, says former football midfielder
Sometimes it seems like the Norwegian striker is scoring goals just for fun. Even so, the effect on his game of Manchester City is the subject of much debate. These have been further fuelled by former midfielder Didi Hamann.
Sometimes it seems like the Norwegian striker is scoring goals just for fun. Even so, the effect on his game of Manchester City is the subject of much debate. These have been further fuelled by former midfielder Didi Hamann.
The number of goals the Norwegian goalscorer has scored is breathtaking. But are they to Manchester’s advantage? The Citizens are no better off in terms of goals compared to last season and it seems as if other players have suffered with the arrival of Haaland.
Former German midfielder Didi Hamann has stated that Pep Guardiola did not want to acquire Haaland, joining other figures who doubt the relationship between the footballer and the Spanish coach.
According to him, Haaland’s strength is the opposite of Manchester City’s strength. They have always been successful because they have held the ball a lot. They had rhythm, they had fluency and they shared the goals.
The former midfielder did not hold back with his opinion and said that they now have a player who sometimes looks like he is not even involved in most games.
“It’s like playing with ten players. It doesn’t matter how many goals he scores. It doesn’t matter how many hat tricks he scores. It doesn’t matter how many goals the team scores. I think they scored less goals than they did at the same stage last season,” the German footballer let slip.
Hamann certainly doesn’t think , that Haaland is a player who fits the Citizens club. According to him, the Norwegian striker is great when playing with a fast style of play. At Dortmund he scored a lot of goals from counter attacks. Playing three, four passes.
Manchester’s game is completely different and the attack is preceded by as many as 40 passes. Erling Haaland is typologically exactly the kind of footballer that Guardiola never sought out.
“Maybe they thought there was a player they could sign for £50m but his price was triple that. Would he be better suited to Chelsea or United? I think so. Would he have scored the same number of goals? I don’t know.”
“Probably not though, because City are getting more chances overall than the two clubs mentioned. But I don’t think he fits City’s game. “Hamann added to his claims.
