Sixth match, sixth win. That’s Matej Peñaz’s record in Oktagon fights under MMA rules. So it seems that his adaptation is going well. But on Saturday, for the first time, he couldn’t finish his fight before the limit.
His opponent was Giovanni Melillo, who has fought in the famous Bellator, even fought Michael Venom Paige. That’s why he didn’t have too much respect for the Moravian fighter, but he didn’t threaten him significantly either.
In all the rounds, Peñaz managed to hit the Italian fighter hard several times, Melillo tied the fight up and dragged him to the fence, where he tried in vain for a takedown. However, the Brno native didn’t allow him to land a single one.
“My training in Sweden paid off, where I work the hardest on the ground. It’s hard on the ego there, wrestling is a completely different sport than the stand-up disciplines. I’ve been boxing since I was 11 years old, I’m used to it, but when I wrestled every day I didn’t feel good for the first month,” he admitted at the press conference.
However, he faced an embarrassing situation in the third round of his bout on Saturday. His opponent was provoking him and trying to upset him, so Peñaz wondered whether to hear him out and go for it. In the end, he didn’t let himself be dissuaded, knowing he had nowhere to rush.
Still only 25 years old, Peñáz trains with stars like Khamzat Chimaev in Sweden. ” Of course, it’s a goal for me, I believe I have the skills and I’m doing my best for it. It will come.”
The Moravian fighter believes that his year in Sweden will help him to make huge progress. And what about the next fight? We could see it in September, Peñáz will probably finally face Vlast Čep.
