Despite an unfortunate start to the match, Viktoria Plzeň won against The New Saints 3: 1 and took the match to penalty kicks, in which they were the better team and deservedly advanced. What did coach Michal Bílek say about the match?
Pilsen lost in Wales 2: 4, so they had to win by three goals to advance in normal time. They didn’t manage to do that, but got the game to extra time.
Thanks to two goals at the end, it didn’t take much for Viktoria to finish the autumn in the cups. However, they were the stronger team, which was confirmed in the penalty shootout.
The shame is thus averted and there is only one more double match left, which the Plzeň players have to manage if they want to play in the group stage.
“I am glad that we won the game and we are moving on, everything else is nice. I appreciate the fact that people came, cheered and drove us to the end. It’s important when you feel the support of the fans and they were here today, so a big thank you to them,” Michal Bílek told the club website.
“We were kicking penalties in training. I knew we had a lot of good goal scorers. I trusted everyone who went for it that we would convert them. I’m glad it worked out that way. At the same time, Ales Hruska supported us… It was a great ending!” he added.
Bílek was widely dismissed by the fans, but that almost certainly won’t happen anytime soon, thanks to the excellent turnaround, and Viktoria are 100% in the league.
