Brazil failed to win gold at the World Cup in Qatar
The historic rivalry between the national teams of Brazil and Argentina is not only known in South America. But the greatest legend of Brazilian football pushed aside all rivalries during the last days of his life.
Brazil is the most successful national team in the history of the World Cup. At last year’s World Cup, Seleção players came to Qatar to win their sixth World Cup title.
However, Brazil had to bow out in the quarter-final battles when they fell short against the Croatia selection. In the end, the tournament was won by rivals Argentina, whose memorable final against France was decided in a penalty shootout.
It is to be expected that there were few Brazilians who would have wanted Argentina to win the tournament after their team was eliminated. One of them spent the final tournament in Qatar in hospital and it was none other than the legendary Brazilian magician Pelé.
Pelé wished Lionel Messi’s Argentina after they were knocked out
According to his daughter, it was he who wished the Argentinians victory after Brazil’s elimination in the aforementioned quarter-final. “When Brazil lost to Croatia in the quarter-finals, my father was already in a bad way,” wrote Kely Nascimento in an Instagram post.
“Everyone wanted Brazil to win the World Cup for my dad and no one more than the players themselves! But my dad knew better than most what football was like. He always said that what he loved about the beautiful game was the possibility that any team could always win,” she said.
After Brazil’s loss, according to the Brazilian legend’s daughter, everyone who entered the former world football ruler’s hospital room asked who Pelé wanted to win the final stage of the tournament. The answer probably surprised many.
“May Argentina win,” Nascimento revealed his father’s wish. “This trophy must stay in South America! Messi deserves it,” he reportedly brushed all rivalries off the table.
When Argentina won the title and its captain Lionel Messi lifted the World Cup trophy over his head, Kely Nascimento revealed that her father was beaming with happiness. Then, just days after the tournament ended, Pelé went to football heaven.
