The Women’s Madrid competition is entering its final rounds. The tennis players will play their quarterfinal matches on Wednesday. Gilbert and Bencic will also play. The home hopefuls are putting in a great performance. She’s playing for the biggest success of her career in Madrid. Will her fairytale story continue at this tournament?

Paula Badosa Gilbert is clearly showing this season that she has a great future. Spain has another great player who can have a similarly successful career as her compatriot Muguruza.

The Spaniard has already shown tremendous potential in smaller tournaments this year. She’s showing it in Madrid. She made ideal use of the easier draw to reach the quarter-finals. First she outplayed Krejcikova, then she made some big reversals against Teichmann and Sevastova.

The Spaniard is very complex, she can change the pace of the game, she has excellent footwork, she can help herself with her serve, she has already confirmed her reputation as a great fighter several times. And that’s a great combination for success in clay tournaments. She will have a chance to advance in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.

She’ll face Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. A player with a similar style of play. She also has a game based on excellent movement and her complex game. She is the 11th player in the world. It would seem that she should be the clear favorite in this match. But she is not.

The Swiss hasn’t shone much this season. She reached the semi-finals in Adelaide and that’s about it with her success this year. She’s not in an ideal playing condition. Even her reaching the quarterfinals in Madrid was quite lucky.

She was a couple of balls away from elimination in the 2nd round and was cut down by her opponent in the 8th round. Luck was on her side. She’ll have to give her best performance of the season against the Spaniard to advance.

What’s your bet?

The chances of both tennis players are pretty even. But the slight favourite should be the Spaniard. She’s in better form, she’ll have the support of the home crowd, she’s playing for the biggest success of her career.

Gilbert won their only match less than a month ago. But Bencic also has tremendous quality. It could be a very interesting fight.
