Patrik Schick still has it in him! He got a chance in the starting line-up and destroyed Bochum with a hat-trick in the first half
Xabi Alonso finally gave someone other than Victor Bonifacio a chance in the starting line-up in the league match against Bochum. And Patrik Schick repaid that trust three times over. Leverkusen thus said goodbye to this year with a record-breaking performance.
Xabi Alonso finally gave someone other than Victor Bonifacio a chance in the starting line-up in the league match against Bochum. And Patrik Schick repaid that trust three times over. Leverkusen thus said goodbye to this year with a record-breaking performance.
The Czech striker has had a very difficult time getting back into shape after an injury. So far, he has only ever received a few minutes from the Spanish coach. But his performances have steadily improved.
That’s probably why Alonso decided to go with Schick in the starting lineup and he did very well! The Czech striker opened the scoring in the 30th minute when he converted a penalty kick. But just two minutes later he was happy again and increased the score to 2:0.
But that was not all, Schick was able to score once more before the end of the first half and the players went into the booths at 3:0.
The second half was much quieter and the score remained unchanged until the 67th minute. It was at that point that the Czech striker left the field, as Bayer’s top scorer this year, Boniface, came on for him. He was able to score after just 2 minutes on the pitch and set the final score of the match at 4:0.
Schick helped Leverkusen to a record
This victory marks a record for Leverkusen as they scored their 25th match without defeat, setting a new Bundesliga record. The record was previously held by Hamburg from the 1982/83 season.
“I don’t think too much about records. We just want to win our games. Of course, we will be happy if that brings records with it,” the Spanish coach, who has been celebrating one big success after another with Leverkusen recently, was heard at the press conference before the game.
Now everyone in the stadium can sing two Christmas carols with a choir, as the club had planned in advance.
Leverkusen will spend Christmas at the top of the league table and their next competitive match will be on 13 January when they face Augsburg. Bayern Munich also won their last game of the year (Wolfsburg 1: 2) and are 4 points behind Bayer, but have a game in hand.
