Boston couldn’t hold on to the lead
In the game Boston Bruins vs Toronto Maple Leafs (2:3), the Maple Leafs were happy after a turnover. They atoned for the initial debacle and evened the series at 1:1. In this game, both of the two “sleeping” cannons woke up. David Pastrnak and Auston Matthews.
Linus Ullmark got the opportunity in Boston’s goal this time and it was the home team that was more active and effective in the first period. The Bruins took the lead through Morgan Geekie, who once again took advantage of the power play.
In this series, the Bruins have been very good on the power play. In the 11th minute, Max Domi tied the game after a pass from Auston Matthews. He made up for the unnecessary suspension in the opening game of this series. But the end of the period belonged to Boston.
Less than 8 seconds before the end, after a Charlie McAvoy – Pavel Zacha collaboration, Pastrňák scored his first goal in this year’s playoffs, breaking his shooting misery from the previous games.
Toronto scored a goal late in the second period, when they also took advantage of a numerical advantage and Ullmark cashed in from the stick of John Tavares. Matthews scored the point on an assist. The Maple Leafs star then broke the shooting jinx at 52:06 to decide the fate of the second game, after four games.
Needless to say, Matthews recorded his fourth three-point performance in playoff games. Only Doug Gilmour (10) and Darryl Sittler (7) have recorded more such nights in club history.
Hertl contributed a goal to the Vegas win
In the Dallas Stars vs. Vegas Golden Knights (3:4), the defending Stanley Cup champions surprised a strong Dallas on its home ice to take the series lead. Czech forward Tomas Hertl scored an important power play goal. He scored in the 18th minute of the first period to give his team a two-goal lead.
Dallas did what it could, but it couldn’t reverse the deficit and fell on home ice quite unexpectedly. Experienced forward Mark Stone scored his 30th goal in the playoffs for Vegas. He is the only player, together with Marchessault, to reach this mark in the club’s history.
Jonathan Marchessault, among others, also scored in this game, making it eleven consecutive playoff games. Only three active players have scored in more games in a row. Miko Rantanen did it 17 times, Nathan MacKinnon did it 14 times and Auston Matthews did it 12 times.
Edmonton outshot Los Angeles
The Edmonton Oilers vs. Los Angeles Kings (7:4) turned into a shootout. Edmonton was the more efficient team. Zach Hyman, the Oilers’ second-leading scorer in the regular season, had a hat trick and an assist.
Captain Connor McDavid once again confirmed his position as a passer by contributing five assists to his team’s goals. And to make matters worse, Evan Bouchard also had four assists.
These three players alone produced 13 points in the Oilers’ game against the Kings. McDavid also made NHL history again, becoming only the 13th player to record at least five assists in a game. The record is held by Wayne Gretzky and Mikko Leinonen, who each recorded one more assist.
