Sparta’s first ever match in the European Conference League ended in defeat. At Letná Letná, Sparta fell to Partizan Belgrade, who took home a 1:0 victory.
It must be said, however, that neither team put in a good performance, and so the rematch is more or less wide open. The Serbs will be driven to advance by half the capacity of the stadium with a handful of Sparta supporters.
The latter had a break over the weekend, as the match with Jablonec was postponed, so the players could regenerate for the important match. On Sunday, Partizan played a league match against Radnicki, which they won 2:0 at home.
The result was by no means surprising, Partizan leads the Serbian league after a sovereign performance, gaining 65 points in 23 matches, losing only two draws. It has a five-point lead over rival Crvena Zvezda.
But the Serbian League is a different competition than the European Conference League, in which Partizan won the opening two matches in the autumn, but then alternated losses with draws and advanced from second place with eight points.
Sparta did not shine in the Europa League either. It won only two matches, earned seven points, but missed out on progressing to the next stage of the Europa League.
What match can we expect on Thursday? It probably won’t be a footballing beauty, the match will be a copy of the one at Letná, but I expect a much better performance from Sparta.
The latter simply has to work hard, it doesn’t want to be eliminated in the first game of the double-header, moreover, it realizes that even though it is not playing for its coefficient in this round, but only for the national one, it will be different in the next ones and it needs to catch up.
So I expect coach Vrba to prepare Sparta much better and they will pull the longer end of the rope. That will make the game winnable and if it’s only by a goal, the fans will have to stress and half an hour longer.
