Last night we witnessed an unforgettable night. In a match between two giants, we got exactly what we can expect from a clash of such big clubs. Real Madrid turned around an unfavourable result in a beautiful match and sent the Parisian big club home. Coach Pochettino and club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi were not happy with the result and complained about the refereeing.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi ran into the referee’s booth
A star-studded Paris Saint-Germain team will once again fall short of the Champions League title and will have to settle for just one possible trophy.
In the LM rematch at the Santiago Bernabéu, although Mbappé increased the Parisian side’s lead to two goals already, the ageless Karim Benzema sent his rivals back to the French capital with a hat-trick in the last half-hour.
The defeat was, of course, hard to take for the French club’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who had set himself high goals ahead of the season. According to the Spanish daily Marca, the club’s chief executive should have run out of the president’s box after the game and headed straight for the referee’s booth.
He didn’t like the controversial situation from the 61st minute, when the visiting team’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma delayed the ball, Karim Benzema finished it emphatically and from a failed kick Los Blancos equalised. The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium exploded as the home fans drove their team forward for a memorable turnaround.
Coach Pochettino also hit out at the performance of the referees
The coach of the visiting team, Mauricio Pochettino, did not hide his disappointment after the match and instead of criticising his team, he focused on the performance of the referees.
“There’s a feeling of great injustice, it was a clear foul by Benzema on Donnarumma,” Pochettino said after the match , according to Marco. “I saw the situation about 30 times from all sides and it was a foul,” recounted the outraged coach.
“Small details decide and VAR didn’t see the decisive foul,” the Argentine went on to criticise the referees. He held up his goalkeeper, 23-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma. “It wasn’t his fault, it was just a foul,” he added of the Italian goalkeeper.
However, the experienced Dutch referee Danny Makkelie deemed the situation to be allowed and the video referee confirmed his verdict. Paris Saint-Germain will thus bid farewell to the millionaire competition in the eighth round.
It will be interesting to see how the situation around Kylian Mbappé, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, develops. But it is clear that the Parisian club is likely to be in turmoil.
