Ovechkin is going through the worst crisis of his career! When will he break his shooting jinx?
The second best goal scorer in NHL history after Wayne Gretzky extended his streak without scoring a goal. The Russian hockey player, who managed to break the mythical 50-goal mark nine times in a season, did not score against the NY Islanders.
The second best goal scorer in NHL history after Wayne Gretzky extended his streak without scoring a goal. Alexander Ovechkin, who managed to break the mythical 50-goal mark nine times in a season, did not score against the NY Islanders.
In the last game, the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders (3: 2) in overtime, when the Russian canonist assisted on the winning goal by Dylan Strom at 61: 41. However, he is experiencing something unprecedented and that is that he extended his streak without scoring a goal by another game.
The Russian hockey player, who recently reached the 1,500 points mark in NHL history, has now extended his streak without a goal to 14 games!
Ovechkin has never had a streak this long. This makes it very difficult for him to break the record of 894 goals scored in the regular season, which is still unwaveringly held by “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky.
The worst career season to date by Alexander Ovechkin
The 2023/24 season is not going well for Ovechkin at all. In 29 games played, he has scored just 5 goals and 18 points for a player of his caliber is no mean feat either.
Leaving aside seasons cut short by the lockout or the coronavirus pandemic, he is surely set for the worst season of his overseas career so far. Both in terms of goals and points.
Sure, there are still a little over 50 games left in the season and yet Ovechkin confidently proclaims that the goals will come and it’s only a matter of time. We’ll see if the card actually turns. The performances so far don’t really indicate that.
The last time he enjoyed the joy of scoring a goal was November 18. During that time, he has sent 51 shots on goal, but none of them have found their way behind the goalkeeper’s back. He has long since broken his longest drought, which was 10 games in a row seven years ago.
He is still 67 shots short of the record and this season’s 40 goals, which he scored last season for the 13th time in his career, sounds a bit utopian.
But as we know, Alexander Ovechkin always explodes at the end of the season and hat-tricks are no exception. Let’s be surprised…..
