In recent seasons, Osasuna has been a traditional mid-table team. This year, however, they had the season of their lives, reaching the Copa del Rey final and securing seventh place in the last round of La Liga to secure the Conference League.
Tenth place, eleventh place and tenth place. These are Osasuna’s last three seasons in La Liga after promotion to the elite. After returning from the second league, they fell right into the average of the Spanish competition.
It had frequent flashes where it managed to beat Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Especially at their El Saddar stadium, they are very uncomfortable to play against. But then she lost points unnecessarily to weaker opponents.
But this season everything was different. Osasuna, with all their strength, first had a great run in the Copa del Rey. They knocked out two traditional Seville sides, defending champions Betis and Europa League winners Sevilla FC.
In the semi-finals, they then took on Athletic Bilbao, a traditional cup team. Only in the final did it lose to Real Madrid. However, by reaching the final, they have secured their place in the next Spanish Super Cup and therefore around another €3 million.
Arrasate’s charges then took their cup run to La Liga. But there was a setback in the penultimate round, where Osasuna lost to Getafe. Before the last round, however, they still had everything in their hands in seventh place.
However, it had the same number of points as Athletic, with Girona, Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla having one point less. Osasuna had just come up against Girona and the other teams were waiting for them to falter.
However, Pamplona did not let that happen, winning 2-1 thanks to two goals from Croatian Ante Budimir and securing seventh place. After 16 years, the team will now go to Europe and play in the preliminary rounds of the Conference League.
